Prayers for the Michigan Legislature

February 6, 2001

Invocation delivered by the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey G. Drutchas before the Michigan House of Representatives in Lansing

O God: We come before you at the start of this legislative session with a heart-felt prayer. In a world of confused and uncertain values, show us what is honorable, just, and true. And in a time when so many would serve themselves first, guide the members of this House to serve in a spirit of humility and with unselfish purpose. In all things, God, instill in those elected to be our leaders a just and compassionate vision of what should be, so that by their efforts and your Grace, the people of this State may know a future blessed with equity, prosperity, and peace. Amen.

O God, in these tough, uncertain times rich in question and quandary about how to use the resources of the State of Michigan best, help this body of public servants to be wise in all its choices and decisions. Guide its men and women to look beyond all purposes partisan or personal so that the common good might be served and upheld. And when the day is over and the job is done, assure them of your blessing and the people's thanks. Amen.

Invocation delivered by the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey G. Drutchas before the Michigan Senate in Lansing

O God: At the start of another legislative day we call upon your gracious blessing and help. Amid the tumult and uncertainty of tough economic times, guide this Senate body in the deliberations and decisions so essential to Michigan's recovery and well-being. Grant to each senator present the wisdom and insight to recognize the fresh opportunities that you make possible even in the face of adversity. Inspire and sustain these men and women, as you alone can do, so that, working together, they can meet all challenges which await, providing vital and determined leadership not only grounded in hope but also tempered by pragmatism. Amen.

Invocation delivered by the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey G. Drutchas before the ‘Legislative Forum’ hosted by the Southern Wayne Country Regional Chamber of Commerce

“O Gracious God: At a time when the politics of our nation are held in disrepute and your people despair that there are solutions to the challenges at hand, help us to restore to our life together a commitment to civility and compassion and a capacity for compromise and
cooperation. Keep us mindful that when all is said and done we shall be judged accordingly to our willingness to forego selfish purposes for the sake of the common good. Inspire and strengthen us in our determination and resolve to bequeath to our children and our children’s children a world far more equitable, just, and fair than we found it. Amen.”
