Prayers for Commencement

May 18, 2003

Prayer delivered by the Reverend Dr. Geoffrey G. Drutchas at Commencement Exercises at Lawrence Technological University, Cobo Center, Detroit, Michigan

O God, as we prepare to go forth into the world, we rejoice that a day so long awaited is a day not attained. In your presence stand the new graduates of Lawrence Tech! Bless and strengthen them in all their endeavors ahead. Help them to use the wisdom they have gained creatively, ethically, and unselfishly. May the world be a better place because their minds have been stirred and their abilities engaged and enlarged by their education here. May you guide these graduates and all of us as your people along paths of true righteousness and grace. Amen.

Invocation delivered by the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey G. Drutchas at Commencement Exercises at Lawrence Technological University, Cobo Center, Detroit, Michigan

O God, this day is an answer--an answer to hopes and dreams; an answer to much hard work; an answer to many, many prayers! As we marvel over what has been accomplished we offer thanks to those who--with you--have made it all possible. Yes, we thank parents, teachers, and friends who along the path at Lawrence Tech and elsewhere have challenged us to do our best and encouraged us onward when our own confidence was flagging and the goal-posts seemed too far away. Now in this hour of commencement limber up our spirits and make our joy more joyful and our happiness more complete. Bless us with your presence and the assurance of good things yet to come. Amen.

O God, as this joyful occasion reaches its culmination and we prepare to depart, we pause in awe at the prospect before us. New careers and fresh life ventures all await. Yet in the face of the exciting possibilities keep us mindful of our responsibility to live for more than just ourselves. Great are the gifts with which you have entrusted us. Wonderful are the skills in science, technology, design, and business all acquired through the diligence of education here at Lawrence Tech. Help us to put these gifts and skills to use for the benefit of many, serving your larger purposes for this planet. May everything we do and the thoughtfulness and integrity with which we accomplish it, honor you and this community of learning that has shaped us for the good. Amen.

O God: With degrees and honors bestowed, now confer on us your grace and blessing. As we go forth into a world beset with uncertainty and trouble help us to use both native talent and acquired skill to make a mark for the good, building up where others might tear down. Against any doubts and disillusionment fill us with hope and the creative imagination to serve your redeeming purposes with intelligence, integrity, and love. Amen.
